Simple budget app: how to choose

5 min

Most budget apps are abandoned within the first month. Rarely for missing features: usually for having too many.

Here are the criteria that decide whether you will still use it in six months.

1. The time it takes each day

An app that needs ten minutes of daily categorising does not survive one busy week.

A good marker: under thirty seconds to log an expense, and an immediate answer with no navigating.

2. Bank connection: convenient, not neutral

Automatic aggregation avoids typing, but means handing your credentials to a third party, with syncs that regularly fail.

Manual entry takes a gesture, but keeps your banking credentials out of the system and always works. Choose what you would rather give up: time, or access.

3. One main figure, not a dashboard

Charts, pie slices, projections: most screens show the past. The daily question points at the immediate future.

A good app answers how much can I spend today at a glance. The rest is secondary.

4. What happens to your data

Some free apps monetise spending-habit analysis or display sponsored banking offers.

Check three things: ads or no ads, data resale or none, and whether you can delete your account entirely.

5. Alerts and mental load

An app that notifies every category overrun adds stress instead of removing it. You end up muting notifications, then never opening the app.

A factual tone, with no judgement and no alarm colours, lasts far longer.

Where Dispola sits

Dispola does one thing: show what you can safely spend in the current cycle. No bank connection, no ads, no data resale.

You enter your balance, fixed income and fixed charges once. After that, each expense takes seconds to log and the figure updates.

The best budget app is the one you will still open in six months. That is almost always the simplest one.

See what you really have left

Dispola subtracts your fixed charges from the current pay cycle and shows one number: what you can safely spend. No bank connection.
